Hotel 1959

Bar

The Palms Bar is designed around the concept of “1970s Palm Springs”. Influenced by the Slim Aaron’s Palm Springs photo series from 1970. Which was
photographed on a backdrop of the Kaufmann Desert House, a beautiful Mid-Century home designed by Richard Neutra and built in 1946. Another Key influence for the design was the film “Don’t Worry Darling” released in September of 2022. The film pays homage to 1970s Palm Springs and also takes
inspiration from the Slim Aaron’s photo series especially in the set design.
To echo the essence of the 70s I created cosy seating areas from modular elements to
replicate the look and feel of a conversation pit, as these were at the height of their popularity
during the 70s. I wanted to create a space for larger groups to gather in a more intimate space that has a homely feel. The open styled shelving adds to this atmosphere while creating separation and privacy. I wanted the space to feel relaxed and welcoming so that
guests can unwind and enjoy a drink with friends in a carefree environment.
I created these semi open living areas to imitate a residential space. Lowering the ceiling adds a sense of privacy and cosiness. I envision these to be used by small groups of friends in the same way that they would use their own home to socialise. The geometric sofa upholstery is a focal point of the space, balanced out by the bespoke abstract rug and mid-century furniture pieces it creates a nostalgic feel. The stone wall is inspired by the set of “Don’t
Worry Darling”, linking the space back to the 1970s Palm Springs concept.
